In short. An AI agent connects a model to data, tools and rules to complete a controlled task. Its value comes from the workflow it solves, not the model it uses.
A one-sentence definition
An AI agent is software that receives a goal, gathers authorized context, reasons about the required steps and uses tools to prepare or execute an action.
This separates an agent from a traditional chatbot. A chatbot responds. An agent can also search a knowledge base, update a CRM, prepare a quotation or route a case to the right person.
Use cases that create value
A strong first use case has four characteristics:
- the task occurs frequently;
- its information sources are identifiable;
- the result can be checked;
- an error can be intercepted before causing harm.
Customer support, request qualification, document research and operational preparation are often practical starting points. A rare, opaque and irreversible decision is a poor first experiment.
The minimum architecture
The language model is only one component. Sources, permissions, tools, useful memory, approval rules and logs also need to be designed. Every access should answer a simple question: why does the agent need this data or action?
Human approval remains important for payments, contractual changes, sensitive communications and decisions with a significant effect on an individual.
Start with a measurable prototype
The prototype should be evaluated on real scenarios, including incomplete requests and edge cases. Useful measures include accuracy, escalation rate, time saved and the ability to explain which sources were used.
The goal is not to prove that AI can talk. It is to verify that a system can complete a business task reliably, observably and in a way teams are willing to adopt.
